A petition seeks safety improvements at an A28 junction in Westgate-on-Sea after a pedestrian was fatally injured.

Michael Grantham lives in Westgate-on-Sea. He wants better safety on the A28 junction where Minster Road and St Mildred’s Road meet.
Grantham’s petition aims to improve safety after Julia Thomas, 71, died there recently. She was crossing the A28 on January 25. An inquest said Thomas was with four others when a car hit her and another woman. The woman died from neck and chest injuries.
The inquest showed a green light for drivers, and stated that the driver wasn’t at fault. Grantham wants slower speeds near the junction.
Grantham said the accident got his attention and he wants easier pedestrian crossings. He said some drivers go too fast there, describing speeds of 70 mph. This is despite a speed camera nearby, but Grantham claims drivers just slow down for it.
He wants average-speed cameras installed and red light cameras to stop people jumping lights. He also wants lights for pedestrians. These lights would help at St Mildred’s and Minster Roads, where children cross those roads, dodging traffic, he stated.
Flowers now mark the site of the accident. Police are investigating, and no arrests have occurred so far.
The petition, which is for speed and red-light cameras, has over 400 signatures already. The council will debate it at 750.
Kent County Council is sorry about the accident. They are reviewing the police report about the crash. The council will review the petition requests and follow their published Petition Scheme rules. The inquest date is still pending.
