Darlington’s Affleck and Moffat tailoring shop, run by the Crosland family, approaches its 100th year.

Affleck and Moffat is a tailoring shop run by the Crosland family for three generations. John Crosland founded it, making custom suits.
John Crosland passed away in 1968, and his son Richard took over at the age of 26. Richard expanded the business, opening more stores in Northallerton, Bishop Auckland, and Barnard Castle.
Richard’s wife, Elizabeth, joined the team, ensuring high standards and helping the business grow. Emma Hendrix, their daughter, joined in 2007.
Emma focused on formal wear rentals, including weddings and proms. She adapted to new trends while maintaining the quality service.
Richard Crosland retired during the pandemic at 75 years old, but he still cares about the store. Emma is the third generation owner and understands the dedication the business requires.
Emma noted that men still prefer custom suits, even with the availability of ready-made options. She is proud that the shop has lasted so long, making Affleck and Moffat a retail staple in Darlington.
