Some band members surprised Gordon Simpson at his house. They played music for a special event. Alloa Bowmar has existed since 1975. Gordon brought together many learners back then. He was the pipe major early on. Dick Owen was his second-in-command as pipe sergeant.

The band’s 50th anniversary matched his 89th birthday. This made the celebration even bigger. Robbie Reid is a band member, and he helped surprise the founder. He thought it was a great afternoon.

Robbie said it was a great day. The band showed up in good numbers, which really surprised Gordon a lot. Tillicoultry Quarries let them tune up first. Then they crept to Gordon’s house, managed with ease.

The band went to Gordon’s house with Donald Balsillie. They greeted him right at his front door and played tunes taught by Gordon. These songs showcased his lasting legacy.

They played “Scotland the Brave” and “Bonny Galloway.” “Rowantree” and “Happy Birthday” were played too. The band finished with “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

Robbie said Gordon called him that night. Gordon thanked him for the great surprise. It took teamwork to make it happen, and it was a wonderful day for him.

Few bands survive for fifty years. This milestone means much to Alloa Bowmar. Gordon Simpson’s vision remains so important, and it still stands at the heart of the community.

Provost Donald Balsillie joined the surprise. He also spoke to honor the day, happy to mark the anniversary and birthday. He pointed out Gordon was the first pipe major.

He added that the band supports Clacks actively. They promote music and develop local talent. This visit shows respect for Gordon. He thanked Gordon and the band, valuing their support for the community and that was good.
