164 years ago, it was February 10, 1861. People saw strange posters about “General Riley.” They wondered who this general was and what he wanted. Some thought an invasion from France was coming. Actually, it was just a speaker from America.

He supported not drinking alcohol and spoke at the Town Hall the next Thursday.

125 years ago, it was February 9, 1900. William Simpson got arrested for stealing. He tried selling a bike in Basingstoke very suspiciously. The police caught him there.

W J Randall said Simpson rented it but never returned it. Mr. Randall told the police about this.

Macintyre & Co. made pretty items with pictures. These items showed a soldier and a poem. The poem was “The Absent-minded Beggar,” written by Rudyard Kipling.

They donated 3 pence from each sale to a war fund. Mrs. Rosa E Layton sold them at her store.

100 years ago, it was February 6, 1925. The Southern Railway offered cheaper tickets from Micheldever to Waterloo on Thursdays. First-class cost 12s. 1d., and third-class was 7s. 3d.

Several trains were available that day, and people were thankful for this service.

75 years ago, it was February 10, 1950. Mr. G P Stewart left the Savoy Cinema after managing it in London Street. He had worked in cinemas for 32 years.

He and his wife managed Blair’s Café next. He worked for Gaumont-British for 14 years before and joined the army in 1939. He became Savoy’s manager nine years before leaving.

47 years ago, it was February 10, 1978. Gas stations ran out of petrol quickly as tanker drivers stopped working overtime. Mr. M Kelly said it was worse than before, and his station ran out of petrol.

But, they kept some for emergencies. He thought rationing might become necessary as people rushed to buy petrol before.

Ponting’s Garage expected to run out of petrol soon, and deliveries did not arrive at all. Springfield Service Station ran out last weekend and expected to run out again soon. Roe Garage ran out of petrol on Monday too.

Garages told people to stay calm and avoid wasting petrol.
