Local politicians request reassessment of Bank of Scotland closure in Barrhead amid community concerns over limited access.

LINK, the UK’s ATM network, assessed the impact. They check how closures affect people and businesses, focusing on cash access within a one-mile radius.
LINK decided no new services were needed, stating that existing services nearby meet the needs of the area. These include deposits, withdrawals, and Post Office services.
Blair McDougall and Paul O’Kane want a review and wrote to LINK. A petition to save the bank got 1,000 signatures, indicating concern about the closure.
O’Kane says the closure is unacceptable, fearing Barrhead could become a “banking desert.” People will have to travel far for services, and he wants LINK to reconsider the impact.
The closest branch is five miles away on Ayr Road in Newton Mearns. McDougall and O’Kane noted transport issues and that many customers still use the bank, also highlighting Neilston’s reliance on this branch.
McDougall supports the petition and encourages more people to sign it. He and O’Kane will explore all options to ensure access to banking, suggesting a community banking hub.
Lloyds Banking Group is closing 136 branches, aiming to cut costs and go digital. A spokesperson said customers increasingly use online banking, and visits to the Barrhead branch have decreased.
Customers can bank online, by phone, or visit the Newton Mearns branch. The local Post Office also offers services. LINK was contacted for a comment.
