Guess what? Auchindoun Castle in Moray is open again! It’s a really old castle dating back to the 15th century.

They fixed it up last year. Work started in October, with a helicopter delivering repair materials. You have to walk to reach it.

Now everything is complete. Historic Environment Scotland manages it and did inspections and repairs. It is now safe to visit.

Graham Smith works for them. Auchindoun is a stone fortress built in the 1400s with a bloody history to tell. The views of Moray are amazing.

It has a lord’s hall and a withdrawing chamber. They found a chamber in 1984. The hilltop views are worth the walk and you have to walk to access the castle.

Auchindoun Castle changed hands over time. Thomas Cochrane may have built it then because he was a favorite of King James III. The Ogilvy family owned it before Sir Adam Gordon bought it in 1594.

In 1571, Gordons burned Corgarff Castle, so William Mackintosh burned Auchindoun in return. He was beheaded for his crime and the Ogilvys got the castle back by 1594. It was abandoned by 1725.

The castle is open every day now. Entry is free, so go explore!
