Julia Hollander shared songs and wisdom from her book,
Why We Sing
, with Marlborough seniors as part of LitFest outreach.

Julia Hollander visited Marlborough again and entertained seniors at The Jubilee Centre. This was part of the LitFest outreach program.
Julia is a music therapist and author who led the group in singing old songs. They sang classics like “She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain,” and “My Darling Clementine” was also on the playlist.
The Jubilee Centre helps Marlborough seniors by providing tea, coffee, and entertainment. A three-course meal is also available, and volunteers help members access town services. New volunteers are welcome.
Julia Hollander understands singing’s power, as she is a singing therapist, teacher, and performer. Her book, Why We Sing, explores this idea and shows how song inspires people throughout life.
Julia says society now sees the joy of singing and how it connects people in our disconnected world. She spoke at the LitFest in September 2024, talking about her book and leading a sing-along.
The LitFest team organized Julia’s return visit, showing the festival offers more than just a weekend. They share reading’s joy with the community, as well as the joy of singing, including people who can’t attend the main festival.
Mary-Vere Parr chairs the LitFest and thanked Julia for returning to Marlborough, as well as the Jubilee Centre team. Julia warmed up reluctant singers that foggy morning, and many cups of tea helped, too. Parr also thanked the festival sponsors, friends, and donors whose support made the entire event possible.
The next LitFest is September 25-28, with Alan Hollinghurst as the Golding Speaker. The festival will have events for all ages, including fiction, non-fiction, and poetry, and the program will debut in the summer.
