Signs went up at the Hempstead Road building last week advertising for someone to take over the pub, just eight months after its rebranding. The signs showed the search for a new operator had begun.

The owners, Stonegate, confirmed the pub closed November 10, and the search for a new operator is underway. Former landlord Denis Cook told the Watford Observer that Avabar wasn’t going to work after six months.

Denis Cook suggests The Horns should return to being a music pub or even become a block of flats. He hopes someone will buy it from Stonegate and run it as a freehold pub.

Avabar opened last June with optimism, featuring Brazilian food, new cocktails, and a redesign. The managing director hoped regulars would embrace the concept after the £150,000 renovation.

Despite the efforts, the pub now faces its fourth closure in three years. A customer, Dan Frost, shared his thoughts, hoping someone with live music venue knowledge can revive its deep history in Watford.

Sam Meadows agreed that a live music venue would be great, adding that Watford used to have a vibrant music scene, but now lacks sufficient venues. Live music was a common suggestion for the pub’s future.

Alongside live music, people also suggested a return to a traditional pub, while some readers even wanted a Chinese or Thai restaurant. Stonegate’s regional manager commented on Avabar’s website, believing it has huge potential for success.

He stated it could function well as a late-night music venue, and a unique food offering could enhance its drink sales. The manager emphasized the publican needs area knowledge and must be multifaceted for success. Avabar’s management did not respond to requests for comment.
