Hey, guess what’s happening with that new A14 bridge? It’s sinking! A local councillor is really mad about it.

Apparently, it’s worse than anyone thought it would be. The bridge is part of a huge road upgrade project which cost about £1.5 billion.

National Highways said they’d monitor the bridge and promised councillors they’d install equipment to track its movement. However, they never did it!

The councillor, Edna Murphy, thinks it’s awful and says people’s cars are getting damaged. They can’t even claim insurance for the damage.

Concerns started about a year ago when the road surface started sinking and cracks began showing up. National Highways did a temporary repair.

They promised to install monitoring equipment, but last month, they admitted they hadn’t. Murphy doesn’t think they’re taking it seriously and feels they aren’t acting fast enough.

She said the bridge isn’t dangerous right now and it won’t collapse. The sinking makes the ramps move a bit, which causes the bumps people feel.

It’s frustrating for people in Bar Hill who use the road every day, as it’s the only way in and out of town. Their patience is gone.

National Highways says the land around the bridge is settling and this happens sometimes with bridges like this. The bridge is still safe right now.

They’ve been watching it for over a year and engineers looked at it. Now, they’ll use digital monitoring equipment too. They are working with the county council and want to find what’s causing the issue.

Murphy asked the county council to make a report to show all the problems from building the A14, where the road work went between Cambridge and Huntingdon.
