Council agrees to sell Camrose Stadium land to Sovereign Housing, ending a dispute after a 2019 eviction.
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council will sell some land. The sale involves the Camrose Stadium; they own 29% of that land right now. Sovereign Housing Group will buy this land, a decision made by the council on February 11.
Last December, most of the land sold already. Basron Developments used to own 71% and sold that to the same developer. This sale ends a long situation that started when the football club got kicked out in 2019.
One of the council leaders, Gavin James, spoke at the meeting, stating this sale is the best option now. They want to build affordable housing there, and he wants to ensure this never happens again.
The council plans to use the money carefully to support local sports and football. Jack Miller, who chairs the football club, also spoke at the meeting and asked the council to make it happen.
He wants a real commitment from them and thinks those affected should have a voice. The football club wants a say in where the money goes, believing it belongs with them.
Paul Harvey, who leads the council meetings, ended the meeting with a vote, and they agreed to sell the land at Camrose. The next discussion is February 27 when the whole council will meet. He said they respect the football club.
