A Basingstoke mother spared jail after assaulting her daughter, who now lives in foster care, fearing relocation to Pakistan.

The daughter had bruises on her arm and shoulder. These marks were still visible days later. The court learned about the case.
The daughter now lives in foster care. She reported the abuse and made a video statement. The court played it during the hearing, which occurred on February 7.
She started harming herself after the incident and fears her parents. She believes they might take her to Pakistan, and she doesn’t want to go.
The prosecutor spoke about the case, stating the abuse was serious. The daughter was young, and the abuse lasted a long time.
Said’s lawyer gave her side, explaining that Said is a teacher who helps children. She also has a degree in child development, and losing her daughter is her biggest punishment.
The lawyer asked for mercy, arguing that jail could affect Said’s husband’s visa. The judge considered the arguments and sentenced Said to eight months, suspended for 18 months. She will not go to jail now. The judge added no other conditions, noting cultural differences exist.
“Times have changed,” the judge stated. He said hitting kids used to be normal, but now, it is against the law.
