New councils could boost local influence; Broadstone, Boscombe among areas considered. Final decision expected in October.

Feedback revealed main suggestions. Broadstone, Redhill, and Northbourne could get new parish councils. Boscombe and Pokesdown might get one too. The same goes for Southbourne. The old Poole and Bournemouth areas might get town councils.
Councillor Millie Earl thanked proposal responders. She also thanked the working group. They considered interest from residents keen on parish and town councils.
Parish councils focus on local priorities. They manage community centers and car parks. They also handle cemeteries, parks, and public toilets. They organize Christmas decorations and provide litter bins. Street furniture, shelters, seating, and events are within scope.
BCP currently has five parish councils, mainly in the old Christchurch area. Councillor Earl said councils let locals have more say. BCP Council will still provide core services and work with any new parish councils.
Parish councils are consulted on planning. They help prevent crime and boost tourism. They can create neighborhood plans. New councils mean a small extra tax, called a precept.
The elected councillors decide the precept amount. These councillors are usually unpaid. The contribution can be zero. Dorset’s average is about £43 for a ‘band D’ property.
Councillor Earl anticipates ongoing discussions. She urges people to share their opinions. Cabinet will discuss recommendations on March 25. Public consultation follows, ending June 22. A final recommendation appears on October 14.
