A new 4m beacon will be installed in Aldershot’s Manor Park, approved on Feb 12th to commemorate VE Day and promote community unity.

The structure will be four meters tall with a one-meter brazier on top. It will stand on a concrete base, protected by two-meter-high railings. This black beacon displays the Rushmoor crest and will sit near The Manor House.
The beacon should show unity and honors the army’s long connection to Aldershot. They want it to last for future locals. The beacon will be lit for big public events, including the 80th VE Day anniversary on May 8th.
The beacon can also be used for civic events. Sophie Porter said they are proud to build it, noting that it brings communities together. She noted Rushmoor’s identity builds on service, which their coat of arms reflects.
She added that crossed swords show army ties, while the crown shows aviation past. The rose reminds them of Hampshire, and lions show resilience and unity. Their motto means strength through unity, making this project about bringing people in Rushmoor together.
She stated the town has deep ties to the army, and this beacon will honor that history. It’s used by every resident to come together. Funding came from recovery efforts and will mark VE Day and other celebrations, representing a sense of belonging.
