Luke Cunliffe is thirteen. He goes on searches for cool, old stuff. These searches happen all over the country.

Recently, Luke found something great during a dig in North Yorkshire. He found a giant sword pommel that might link to the Scottish war of independence.

The pommel features fancy decorations, suggesting an important person could have owned it. Luke, who attends Woodham Academy, had to give the pommel to a finds officer.

Experts at the British Museum will examine the artifact. Luke’s dad, Dave Cunliffe, is thirty-nine years old. They live in Newton Aycliffe and travel to digs all over the country.

Luke really enjoys these searches and often accompanies his dad. They were both very excited about Luke’s find, recognizing its significance.

A pommel sits at the bottom of a sword’s handle, decorating and balancing the blade. The fancy decorations suggest an important person used the sword, which might even connect to events in the Scottish wars.

Dave is unable to disclose the exact location, only confirming it’s in North Yorkshire. The item had to be turned over to a finds officer, and experts at the British Museum will study it to determine its historical significance.
