Firefighters in Bradford organized the 56for56 appeal. They want to support the Plastic Surgery and Burns Research Unit. People call it the Bradford Burns Unit.

Professor David Sharpe created the unit after the Bradford City fire in 1985. The fire killed 56 people. Fifty-four were Bradford City fans and two were Lincoln City supporters. Two hundred fifty-eight people got hurt.

The firefighters toured the burns unit, learning about its research. The Bradford Sling impressed them. Professor Sharpe invented it, improving hand injury care globally.

The firefighters plan many events to raise money. They will walk 75 miles in April, starting at Lincoln City’s stadium and ending at Bradford’s stadium.

Phil Warden works at Bradford Fire Station. He said the tour helped them understand their fundraising goal. He is a Bradford City fan and knows the burns unit’s work is vital. The fire affected many beyond those killed; families and friends still feel the loss.

Dr. Kirsten Riches-Suman spoke about the burns unit and shared its impact. She said she feels very proud of their work and enjoys discussing their achievements.

Professor Ajay L Mahajan directs research. He noted the roles of police, fire, and health services in helping the community remember the 56 victims. They hold a memorial service yearly and he appreciates the fire service’s fundraising, saying their enduring support means a lot.
