Last year, the Boundary Commission looked at Breckland Council’s layout. Population growth made them start this review. Some areas had too few council representatives.

They thought increasing councillors would help. But councilors now think this work is pointless. A local government change is probably coming soon.

The Boundary Commission wants fair elections across the country. Phase one suggested increasing Breckland councilors. The number would go from 49 to 51.
Breckland Council created plans for a new layout, and approved sending the new plans to the Commission this week.

Norfolk’s councils might disappear due to reorganization. New councils could replace the old ones. Labour Party plans this change with more local power.

Currently, Norfolk uses a two-level system for services. The county council and other councils provide services. The change aims for a one council system. One council would give all services. Norfolk and Suffolk would elect a mayor.

Terry Jermy said the work may be useless. He thinks Breckland Council elections might not happen again. Yet, the layout could still help future talks.

Roger Atterwill agreed this was a waste. He believes the work will be tossed out and stated repeating the process is happening across the county. He feels a lot of effort was wasted.
