The pub is reborn! Brew York’s seventh location revives a beloved local spot, blending tradition and modern style.

This pub is Brew York’s seventh location. Brew York began with a tap room in Walmgate that opened back in 2016.
The reopening happened on February 21, preceded by a residents’ night. Wayne Smith, Brew York’s founder, cut a ribbon and welcomed local residents inside the pub.
Wayne Smith stated that Brew York wanted to make great beer and offer a great place to drink it. He added that while many pubs struggle now, Brew York aims to grow and offer people a place to drink. Wayne believes that if people like a pub, they will try the beer.
Brew York wants to recreate a certain feeling with this, their first traditional York pub. It looks like a pub but has Brew York’s stylish twist.
Wayne stated that the 17th-century pub is very important to locals, and they are happy to present this concept. He hopes people will enjoy the pub.
Rachael Maskell, York Central MP, attended the reopening, as did Clifton Ward’s Cllr Danny Myers. Maskell spoke about supporting local pubs, stating Brew York shows the industry’s future and that pubs need to be in and for the community.
Cllr Myers said locals wanted the pub back, and he is glad Brew York is there. In his view, a York brewery running a pub is great and signals that people want to invest in Clifton. Clifton Green is becoming vibrant again, and Brew York making excellent beer is a bonus for Clifton and York people.
The Old Grey Mare is open midday to 11pm, Sunday to Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday. YUZU provides the food.
