They are adding a new bus lane. The lane goes west on Marine Parade. It runs from Sea Life Centre to Lower Rock Gardens. They will install a new crosswalk, too. It will be east of Camelford Street. The builders will resurface the whole road.

The project has phases. This limits issues during events. The Brighton Marathon occurs in April. The road is wide enough. They can build the lane without removing other lanes.

When done, the bus lane works all day. Taxis and cyclists can use it too.

Work begins on Monday, March 3. It starts on the pavement. They prep it for the new crosswalk. Road resurfacing happens near month’s end. Next, they will work on Marine Parade crossings. The full resurfacing happens later this spring.

Marine Parade is a key bus route. Over 250 buses go each way daily. Traffic changes during the day and year. Congestion makes bus times hard to predict. Buses sometimes end trips early or start late. That situation should improve.

The city held a public talk last year. Almost nine hundred people responded. They changed the plan based on feedback. They kept the crosswalk east of Camelford Street.

The city uses a trial order for the bus lane. It’s called an ETRO. They can adjust it in the first eighteen months. A six-month public comment period follows. After that, they decide if the lane is permanent.
