Brixham will mark 80 years since World War II ended in Europe. The town will have over 40 free public events dedicated to honoring those who died

The Brixham Lottery supports this special occasion. From May 7 to May 11, the town transforms into a hub of remembrance and celebration.

Eighty years ago, people celebrated the war’s end, which had begun in 1939. Communities mourned their losses. They also thanked those who had fought, looking to the future with hope.

Throughout the week, people will remember the sacrifices made by the armed forces, merchant navy, and local heroes who served. Some of these heroes died, and others returned bearing scars.

The event also honors those who worked on the home front. This includes factory, mine, and farm workers, as well as the Women’s Land Army. Recognition is also given to ARP wardens, police, doctors, nurses, and firefighters.

Brixham Future CIC, a non-profit addressing local issues, is working with local groups to arrange the events. They also planned D-Day events for June 2024 which included displays and concerts.

The community will gather for a parade, a musical performance, and a concert. Additionally, there will be a museum exhibition, dinner, and dancing. A brass band and singing are also planned.

A plaque unveiling will start events on May 8 at 9:00 AM, honoring the ‘P’ Men at Breakwater. Local heroes will then be unveiled at Churchill Gardens on Berry Head Road at 10:00 AM.

A Victory Parade will take place at 10:45 AM. It will then proceed to the Brixham War Memorial, where a wreath laying service will follow at 11:00 AM. At Noon, the parade will go to Fore Street. Scottish Pipers will perform in Fore Street at 12:30 PM. The Victory Street Party is scheduled from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

On May 9, a 1940s Walk will begin at 10:30 AM, starting at the Coaching Inn on Fore Street. More event details will arrive in March. People are welcome to plan their own celebrations, perhaps in the form of street parties or school activities.
