Burnley Council made a decision about Projekt, a club on Hammerton Street, after the police requested a review of its license due to concerns about crime, disorder, and child safety.

The council held a hearing over two days, listening to both the police and the club owners. It was noted that Mode, another club run by the same individuals, had closed the previous year.

Councilor Anne Kelly explained that the committee chose to revoke the license. This decision was made to support important goals like maintaining public safety and order.

The committee identified failures in four key areas. These included instances of violent behavior both inside the club and in the surrounding vicinity, with involvement from the hired door staff. Furthermore, illegal drug sales were found to be occurring on the premises.

Underage alcohol sales and significant fire safety issues, raised by the fire service, were also discovered at the club. Loud noise from the club bothered the public and, coupled with violent disorder on the street, created significant concerns.

The council determined that the noise constituted a statutory nuisance. Moreover, underage children, including a thirteen-year-old, were found inside the club consuming alcohol, prompting concerns that revoking the license was necessary to protect children.

The council believes that revocation is the appropriate action to uphold its safety objectives. Councilor Kelly advised the club owners of their right to appeal the decision in court within 21 days of receiving the written decision.
