A local leader wants a roundabout repaired because heavy trucks keep hitting it, causing damage. Melanie Soanes leads the residents’ group and she says the road agency should fix it.

The roundabout sits on Orttewell Road in Bury St Edmunds. Trucks use it as a shortcut, even though this isn’t a designated truck route. The trucks damage the roundabout, making bricks loose.

Melanie worries about accidents happening there, stating the repairs are not urgent. This was back in September, and they would keep watching the area, they promised.

Residents talked about it again Monday and discussed fixing it themselves, which would cost about £4,000. Melanie wants the agency to fix it instead because she thinks it is their responsibility.

Melanie says the agency isn’t taking responsibility and the damaged roundabout looks bad. Loose bricks create more risks to people, she added.

Bricks fall into the road, causing a hazard. Melanie mentioned bikers could hit them, especially dangerous at night, and this problem was reported before in 2022 and 2023.

The road agency said they’d inspect soon, last September, and they have been asked for comments on the situation now.
