Newport Council will review community centers and libraries. The review relates to the 2025/26 budget, putting Caerleon’s town hall and library at risk since the town hall is a listed building.

Almost 200 Caerleon residents met with the council on February 3 after the announcement to discuss the impact on their lives.

Over 4,000 people signed a petition stating the town hall encourages socializing and supports affordable childcare and wellbeing.

Councillor Stephen Cocks gave an update stating the town hall proposal was dropped, because the cabinet and council leader listened.

The full council must still ratify the decision, however, Cocks expects colleague support, and he says this is good news for Caerleon.

The community united and sent a clear message, people value public services and they are worth fighting for. A large number supported the petition, and turnout was strong at the public meeting.

Groups and individuals played a role, Cherubs, guides, and the Civic Society helped, and the RBL and bowling groups participated too.

Cocks thanked everyone for campaign support, because it means the town hall and library will be strengthened as groups will help design the future.

Local members thank people for support, it was a very anxious time, but the future of the hall and library is now secure, so people should continue to use and love them.
