Volunteers will ride the X32 bus between Oxford and Didcot, offering friendly chats to combat loneliness.

This program started in 2019 and was liked. The bus company planned more Chatty Bus days. They chose May 14 and October 10 for these. Luke Marion said this helps those who feel lonely.
Luke Marion manages Oxford Bus and Thames Travel. He hopes Chatty Bus helps people feel better. It creates chances to connect and share with others. They also plan to expand the Chatty Bus idea.
Research showed that buses help people connect. Two-thirds feel that buses build community ties. Eight in ten know someone needing the bus. A third take the bus hoping for human interaction.
Volunteers wear blue so you know who they are. These “Chatty Bus Champions” will talk to people. They will listen to anyone who wants company. These volunteers will be near the front.
Riders can choose to wear a “happy to chat” badge. Or, you can enjoy your quiet bus ride. Volunteers can tell you about local groups. They also share tips for enjoying Oxford.
Oxford Bus and Thames Travel runs this program. It is part of their “Oxford Bus Cares” project. The parent company pledged to help reduce loneliness in 2022. The government also supports this pledge.
