Sadiq Khan wants “swimmable rivers” in London by 2034. His deputy says this helps social and racial justice, as the plan aims to improve water quality citywide, and improve access to swimming for deprived areas.

Mete Coban spoke to the London Assembly, stating that the goal is swimmable water by 2034. He added that not all areas will be safe, because tides and depth may limit swimming locations.

Zack Polanksi, committee chairman, supported the target. Coban said this goal is a huge commitment that addresses a social and racial justice issue.

Coban stated many black Londoners can’t swim, later clarifying his statement to mean stats on who actually swims. Sport England has related figures.

Sport England claims 95% of black adults don’t swim, and 80% of black children don’t swim. For Asian adults, it’s 93% ; for children, 78%. White British adults: 89%, children: 71%.

Coban said lack of access limits swimming, adding that the plan aims for many swimmable spots but some places won’t be safe. The project is about more than just swimming directly.

The project will create cleaner, healthier rivers, and access includes paths for walking. These paths improve neighborhood enjoyment and mental wellbeing.

Khan plans a March discussion where “International partners” will share river cleanup ideas. Cities such as Paris may participate.
