Consett’s Empire Theatre may close three days each week due to a proposed revised timetable from Durham County Council. Locals fear this change will hurt the theater and damage Consett town centre’s economy.

At a council meeting, Councillor Kevin Earley expressed his concerns. He stated that closing the theater impacts the whole town and reducing operating nights limits film access. This, in turn, means less money for the theater which could risk its future.

The theater closed for seven months earlier in 2024 due to roof repairs costing £470,000, which severely reduced income. Last year, the theater’s expenses exceeded its budget by £59,776, costing £135,892 while the budget was £76,116.

Originally built in 1913, the theater seats 500 people. Leisureworks managed the theatre until 2018, when the council took over its operation. The theatre shows musicals, music, comedy, and children’s shows and films are currently scheduled around live shows.

Another councillor, Veronica Andrews, is also worried that the reduced hours might close the theater, noting the closures follow recent investments. Andrews, a frequent attendee of the theater and its cafe, believes losing them would affect many people.

Council members expressed empathy for workers as reduced hours could cause them job losses. Split shifts will increase and impact staff life, with workers also fearing taking holidays because they are unsure if their jobs are secure.

Durham council, which also manages Gala and Bishop Auckland Town Hall, stated venues face financial challenges. They want programs that are financially stable and plan new approaches for audience growth, including dynamic ticket pricing and fundraising to support the venues.

Alison Clark, the council’s head of culture, sport, and tourism, spoke about Empire Consett, confirming its popularity and cultural importance. She noted that last year’s panto did really well.

Cultural venues get public funding from the council to support culture for all residents. They want all ages to access shows and cinema, and constantly review services to ensure residents get the best value. Clark affirmed they will not reduce live shows at Empire Consett and the opening hours will align with the shows and run efficiently.
