There’s an event happening in Bishop Auckland. It’s on March 8 at the town hall. The Lord Lieutenant of County Durham is hosting ‘A World of Inspiration’.

Three speakers will be there: Chinwe Russell, an artist and curator from Doncaster; Professor Azadeh Fatehrad, who teaches at Teesside University; and Sarah Price, who heads Locomotion at the Science Museum Group.

Two new exhibitions will open too. One is called ’20 Historical Women Who Changed The World’, and the other is ‘Inspirational Women of Durham’.

The first exhibit showcases the lives of impactful women. Chinwe Russell’s collection includes Marie Curie, Elizabeth I, and Florence Nightingale, along with some less well-known figures.

The second exhibit is in the Strong Room gallery. It displays portraits of inspirational Durham women, created by artist Jilly Johnson with the help of Durham County Council.

Sue Snowdon is featured in a portrait, as is Elsie Marley, a pub landlady. Marie Gardiner is also contributing, creating a soundscape of Durham women’s voices.

Elizabeth Scott spoke about International Women’s Day. She said it’s a time to reflect and strive for gender equality, noting that the speakers offer unique views.

Specifically, Chinwe Russell’s art tells stories and promotes visual arts engagement. Azadeh Fatehrad studies gender and identity, using art and research in her work. Sarah Price has led changes at Locomotion and wants it to inspire everyone, planning anniversary projects.

The event on March 8 starts at 10 AM, and tickets cost £3. The exhibits are open from March 1 to May 24; check their website for details.
