The hotel rooms later became apartments. But the pub remained open, known for its local vibe and cheap and cheerful atmosphere. Now, The Greyhound is getting a makeover to become a hotel with fourteen rooms, a pub, and a restaurant.
The hotel will return to the original third floor, and the pub will be nicely fixed up. Ben Quaintrell, who bought the place in 2022 and has already invested a lot in it, plans to restore its former glory. The Greyhound, once a railway hotel, has been part of the town’s history for years.
Hints of the old hotel are still visible, like the mosaic floor at the entrance. Etched windows showcase early 20th-century pub style. Parkgate linked the station to the town, making The Greyhound a popular spot.
The Hippodrome’s opening in 1907 also contributed to its popularity, attracting actors and theater fans. The pub has maintained its early 1900s feel, with old seating, a tiled floor, and a cool bar. Unfortunately, some old fireplaces are now gone.
Over time, the hotel part faded, and the upper floors became apartments. Only the pub remained open. The Greyhound has faced challenges lately, closing a few times, including in 2009 before briefly reopening.
Currently, it’s known for karaoke and friendly staff. Although not officially listed, the building is in a protected area, preserving its historical significance. Darlington Council has renovation plans to maintain the Edwardian building’s style.
The restoration will preserve original doors and windows. Plans include removing unattractive back additions and adding a new two-story structure. Quaintrell aims to restore its character.
