Dartford considers pedestrianising its high street. See resident and business views on access, safety, and outdoor seating plans.

The council wants more pedestrian space and better rules for vehicle use. They hope to limit “inappropriate” vehicle use, which should help shoppers. Currently, rules limit vehicles during certain hours. Loading is allowed later in the evening, and some vehicles have access, like postal trucks. Civil officers can fine rule breakers.
The council may use cameras and bollards to manage vehicle access better. They would monitor deliveries on High Street and Lowfield Street. One option is to fully pedestrianize the area, with raised bollards blocking all vehicles at all times. Another option allows loading from 5 PM to 10 AM.
A third option could allow loading mornings only, from 5 AM to 10 AM. A fourth option adds another evening window, allowing loading from 5 AM to 10 AM and 5:30 PM to 7 PM. The changes aim for a safer, nicer place.
A recent makeover made Market Street feel “classy,” and shoppers liked it, despite less parking. Some people want the high street for people only. They believe deliveries should happen at night because kids could get hurt by cars. They strongly support bollards for safety.
One resident wants no cars, especially on Sundays, feeling that evenings are risky due to many cars. E-scooters also speed through the area. Others worry about complete closure, as it might not be practical at all times. Picking up kids requires car access, and delivery drivers also need access.
One business owner thinks current rules work, favoring daytime blocking but knowing others may struggle. Engineers need access for heavy parts. He wants a safe shopping area, noting that some drivers cut through the street. The council thinks changes will help businesses, potentially leading to more people staying longer and spending more.
Plans include “streateries” or outdoor seating, as many food businesses already offer outside dining space. These new proposals could expand upon them. The business owner welcomes outdoor seating, mentioning that it is normal in Europe. He thinks Dartford’s new flat surface will help but cautions about monitoring these areas.
The council stated it plans to take proper safety precautions if approved, as it is legally required. A consultation is now happening for the public. A council member welcomes the consultation, mentioning they’ve had resident complaints about cars. The high street has been mainly for walkers. They now hope to regulate vehicle use, aiming to find a solution for everyone.
Outdoor seating could give businesses more options. The council wants safe streets for all, which would help businesses and kids walking to school. Markets would thrive, and shoppers could have fun. The street may become one way at Market Street, with no entrance from Market Place. After consultation, a decision report will be made public. The council will consider feedback and policies.
Residents will learn the outcome. If approved, cameras and rules would then be put in place.
