Number 1 Coffee Shop relocates to a larger, more accessible space, enhancing its community hub role after recent funding.

A CIC benefits communities, not shareholders. Number 1 Coffee Shop operates as a CIC, serving the people of Darwen. Groups use the space to meet.
The shop almost closed two months ago. Joanne Bates and volunteers raised money and completed the move. Joanne got the keys in January. They opened on February 1.
Joanne feels proud they’re now open. Their old space was very small. The new place has high ceilings and quiet corners for reading or work.
It is much more accessible now, with a ramp allowing wheelchair access. A lift goes to the class area. The cafe is a meeting spot for groups.
People attend Dungeons and Dragons there weekly. A lady leads a macramé group weekly. They also have knit-and-natter groups. Art classes happen there too. British Sign Language lessons and first-aid courses are also offered.
Joanne says it’s a community hub. The town welcomes the new coffee shop. They made more money the first week than a month before.
It is a welcoming and friendly spot. People can meet others, enjoy coffee, or enjoy a quiet coffee alone.
