Kieran Hughes, now 40, used to be a greengrocer. He first saw on-call firefighters doing their job and moved to Stanhope. He then visited the local fire station one training night and felt amazed by the crew’s teamwork.

This experience inspired him to join the fire service. In 2013, he became an on-call firefighter, working at the Stanhope Fire Station. Kieran never planned to be a firefighter; he had always dreamed about being a vet.

Moving to Stanhope changed his path when he met his wife. He decided to check out the local fire station, saw how close the crews were, and watched them train. This motivated him to become a firefighter.

For years, Kieran responded to calls as an on-call firefighter while also working various jobs, including as a train technician and managing a shop floor for tool sharpening. Helping people was important to him. He became a full-time firefighter in 2022 and got promoted to crew manager in 2024.

Kieran still works as a on-call watch manager at the Stanhope Fire Station. Now, Kieran hopes to inspire others in his new role as on-call support officer.

Helping people in the community is rewarding, and you feel proud to support your community. On-call firefighters make the workforce diverse. Mechanics, shop workers, builders, and farmers join, bringing useful skills for tough situations.

Olivia Selby, age 19, loves helping people, making being an on-call firefighter perfect. She joined the fire service in September 2023 and works at the Consett Fire Station.

She responds to fires and car crashes, arriving within five minutes of getting the alert. Olivia also works for a fire safety company, where she teaches fire safety and leads fire cadets.

Olivia wanted to be a firefighter since she was little, and joining the cadets was her first step. She loves all parts of being a firefighter, and her favorite part is using breathing gear. She wants to become a full-time firefighter and is proud to serve her childhood community; her mom tells everyone how proud she is.
