Tyttenhanger’s name appeared in 1248 as ‘Tydenhangre’. It likely means ‘Tilda’s wooden slope’. Tyttenhanger Park sits near the A414, between London Colney and Colney Heath.

The park boasts the historic Tyttenhanger House. This house features Grade II-listed stables and a chapel, alongside residential spaces. Henry VIII stayed in the house around 1528, seeking refuge from the “sweating sickness.”

St Albans Abbey held ownership of this location long ago. In 1537, the Crown transferred it to Sir Thomas Pope, founder of Trinity College, Oxford. His family retained ownership until 1973, after which it became offices. It sold for £4.7 million in 2018.

Hill End Farm, another notable building locally, is also Grade II-listed. England’s inaugural steeplechase took place here. That land is now known as Highfield Farm. A four-bed house costs £900,000, while a two-bed apartment costs £375,000.

Tyttenhanger offers a range of amenities with a Spar store nearby. Residents can find takeaways, a doctor, and a barber shop at Highfield Shops on Russet Drive.

The Plough, a pub on Tyttenhanger Green, offers a friendly, relaxed vibe. Tyttenhanger benefits from easy access to roads, including the M1, M25, and A1(M). Additionally, St Albans train station is nearby, providing fast London journeys.

The Charles Morris Hall serves as the community center. Named after a Highfield Hall owner, the hall can be hired for events. Tyttenhanger fosters a strong community spirit by organizing numerous events.

An annual bonfire and Christmas party are beloved traditions. Regular quiz nights provide entertainment. Highfield Park, north of the hamlet, encompasses 60 acres of green space. Visitors can enjoy cycle paths, boules courts, orchards, and a maze.

Tyttenhanger is a haven for bird watchers. The Gravel Pits offer excellent bird-watching opportunities, recognized by the RSPB and Herts Bird Club. Meanwhile, the quarry extracts sand south of Coursers Road.

Here, one can spot gulls and sandpipers. Dunlins, ducks, and sand martins also inhabit the area. Butterflies and dragonflies thrive, and the fishing lakes are very popular.

Nuffield Health is situated near the park. It features personal trainers and a gym, as well as offering pools and squash courts. Physiotherapy services are also available.

Windermere and London Colney schools are in close proximity, with both receiving good ratings. Samuel Ryder Academy, serving ages four to nineteen, is also rated good and located in St Albans.
