Gloucestershire Police report nearly a third of January arrests were domestic abuse suspects, totaling 244 arrests.
The youngest person arrested was just seventeen. The oldest was seventy-seven years old. Most detainees were between thirty-five and forty-four. This group made up 33% of the arrests. Police shared arrest data each week in December.
They wanted to show how common domestic abuse is. December also saw 244 arrests. This was the highest number since July of last year. In January, many arrests involved physical assault.
The assaults targeted partners, former partners, or family. There were 124 arrests for physical assault overall. Specifically, there were 51 arrests for ABH. Four people were arrested for GBH.
Common assault resulted in 68 arrests. There was also one wounding arrest. Some arrests involved shocking incidents. One man allegedly hit his partner with a shoe. Another strangled his partner and controlled her for years.
Another punched, kicked, and threatened his partner and her dog. Seventeen people violated bail conditions or court orders. Police arrested four men for suspected rape. Another man was arrested for attempted rape.
Nineteen arrests involved stalking with fear of violence. This includes repeated, unwanted behavior. One ex-partner sent threatening messages. Another banged on their ex’s door. One called the victim often and showed up uninvited.
Police arrested another 29 people for harassment. In total, 208 men were arrested that month. That is an average of six men each day. They were arrested for domestic abuse related offenses.
Thirty-six women were arrested in January. Twenty-nine faced assault allegations. One woman pushed and punched her partner. This happened in front of their child. Another threatened to burn down their home.
One woman hit her partner and threw a can at his face. One woman threatened her mother with a knife. One woman breached bail. Two women were arrested for harassment. Last month, officers arrested 797 people.
Domestic abuse suspects made up 31% of those arrests. Domestic abuse includes physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. It also includes controlling behavior.
