Hey, guess what’s happening in Wareham? The council leader changed his mind about a train crossing. Nick Ireland said he can’t support Network Rail’s bridge idea anymore. Locals really dislike the bridge plan.

This change happened after a big protest last weekend. The actor Edward Fox led this protest. Network Rail wants to close the level crossing, saying it costs taxpayers £120,000 yearly and that they want to improve safety. But, there haven’t been accidents there in 40 years!

Now, the council will fight the closure with the townspeople. Ireland stated it’s the right thing. He mentioned the crossing might close in 2038. The council used to seek a compromise with Network Rail.

The community strongly opposes the bridge and similar solutions. The council isn’t accepting the loss of street-level access. They now oppose the closure completely and don’t want ramps or elevators there.

Ireland went to a demonstration at the crossing, joined by local councilors, Vikki Slade MP, and Edward Fox. Many townspeople showed up, making it a big event. People want the current setup to stay.

Walking across the ground is the best way to get across, they feel. The council won’t waste money on unwanted solutions. They think it’s not the council’s job to help Network Rail. Network Rail has been asked to comment on the change.
