These figures are the base council tax amount. They include Dorset Council’s share, fire, rescue, and police costs. Most residents also pay a parish or town fee, though only a few areas have no extra fee.
An average Band D home’s parish fee varies considerably. For example, Affpuddle and Turnerspuddle charge £51.44, while Blandford Forum charges £253.83. Bridport charges £204.44, and several other towns have different rates.
Crossways is £59.48, Dorchester is £214.54, and Lyme Regis is £68.82. Shaftesbury charges £219.67, Sherborne charges £269.76, and Swanage charges £188.86. Studland is £153.20, Wareham is £247.55, Weymouth is £199.70, and Wimborne is £148.50.
Dorset Council states that some people are eligible for less council tax. Allowances can help single people, and certain benefits can also reduce the cost. Furthermore, empty homes may also get lower rates.
Over 20,000 homes currently receive Council Tax Support. In addition, 10,000 pensioners are receiving help, and 60,000 people get a single-person discount. 1,300 people further benefit from disabled reductions.
The council successfully collects 98.5% of taxes, which is a high rate compared to similar areas. Councillor Simon Clifford praised the collection team for their efforts, stating that they bring in needed revenue.
