Council approves Downshire Golf Complex cemetery expansion amid objections. Burial space is urgently needed in Bracknell Forest.

Bracknell Forest needs more burial space, as they might run out by mid-2025. The plan went to the planning committee, and council leaders approved it back in November.
Over 400 residents objected to this plan, worrying about losing playing space, which could hurt the local sports community. One objector, Mr. Price, spoke to councilors. He stressed the importance of safe spaces, noting that kids need to be active, away from devices.
The golf course is used by 150 kids each week. Mr. Price said it supports many people, even pros.
The land will provide 1,173 new plots and includes 150 Muslim burial plots. There will also be 1,168 plots for cremated remains; that space should last 25 to 30 years.
Mr. Price wanted a replacement for the golf, but council officers said it wasn’t required. The council mentioned other golf facilities nearby, four to five miles away. The committee knew losing the course was sad. Yet, the need for burials was too great.
Twenty-seven people supported the plan, as it helps the Muslim community, whose faith requires burial after death. Councilor Tony Virgo opposed taking more land.
He suggested other burial methods, proposing deeper graves and stacking burials, as seen in France and Italy. The council explored other sites prior to this decision. Those sites were unviable because the council did not own them; they would have needed to purchase the land.
Despite his concerns, Cllr. Virgo approved the plan. The council will give final approval later.
