A young man, Harry Kirk, was drinking. He booked a taxi to go home later. The taxi driver then called authorities when Kirk exited the taxi to get his keys, which he needed from his own car.

Kirk felt okay to drive after getting into his Ford. Police arrested him for drunk driving soon after near the Tuesday Market Place in Lynn.

The court heard the case on Thursday at Lynn Magistrates’ Court. The prosecutor, Abdul Khan, talked about the incident, explaining that police received a report on February 2 about a drunk driver leaving the area. Police found Kirk on Wisbech Road and quickly pulled him over.

A breath test showed alcohol presence, revealing he was over the legal limit and leading to his arrest. His breath reading was 77mcg/100ml, exceeding the driving limit of 35mcg/100ml.

His lawyer, David Foulkes, spoke for Kirk, explaining they were drinking in Lynn earlier that night. Kirk booked a taxi but realized he left keys in his car, so he went to retrieve them and then decided to drive himself home.

Kirk works for his parents, and Foulkes stated Kirk can’t visit customers now, resulting in his job duties changing drastically. The lawyer described this as devastating, emphasizing his family values his hard work and will keep him employed doing administrative tasks during his driving ban.

Kirk had a promising career, said Foulkes. The court disqualified Kirk from driving, banning him for 18 months, and imposed a £650 fine, a £260 surcharge, and £85 in court costs.

Magistrate William Hush commented on the case, stating that Kirk was lucky. He called it a very foolish mistake, adding that he initially made a good choice with the taxi.
