Hey, want to hear something crazy? UK police caught many speeders. Almost half caught drivers doing over 90mph. This happened on roads with 30mph limits. It went down between January 2023 and August 2024.

The RAC checked the data. They think the government should act, as a new road safety plan is coming. Speeding causes avoidable accidents, they say. The highest speed was 122mph, and it happened in South Yorkshire.

On 20mph roads, someone did 88mph. North Wales Police recorded that one. These roads often have more walkers, cyclists and others who are very vulnerable there. The fastest speed overall was 167mph, on the M1 motorway, clocked by Leicestershire Police.

The RAC guy, Rod Dennis, spoke out. He mentioned the incredibly dangerous actions that the police caught them doing. Speeding causes many UK road deaths. They hope the safety plan helps.

Jo Shiner also commented. She leads roads policing nationally. She said some speeding is accidental, however, these speeds are deliberate acts. Speed limits exist for good reason, and exceeding them is reckless.

Here are some top speeds by police area:

* South Yorkshire: 122mph
* Sussex: 113mph
* Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire: 112mph
* West Mercia: 106mph
* Lancashire: 104mph.

Nottinghamshire and Bedfordshire hit 103mph. West Midlands and Northern Ireland: 100mph. Dorset: 97mph, Lincolnshire: 96mph. Avon & Somerset, Kent, and Scotland: 93mph. Leicestershire reported 92mph.

Cambridgeshire, Durham, and Gwent: 91mph. Essex and Hampshire both reached 90mph. Devon & Cornwall, Merseyside, and Norfolk: 89mph. Staffordshire: 87mph.

Northumbria and Hertfordshire went up to 85mph. Suffolk and Warwickshire got to 83mph. Cumbria saw 78mph. Cheshire and North Yorkshire both reached 77mph. Northamptonshire: 76mph.

Gloucestershire got to 74mph. North Wales police recorded 72mph there. Cleveland: 64mph.

In 2023, 331 people died due to speeding drivers. This is at least a 10-year high. Speeding was a factor in 21% of road deaths.

A survey showed that 55% think speeding is normal. Only 23% disagreed with this. The government says there are penalties, and relaunched their “Think!” campaign, focusing on speeding, especially in rural areas.
