Ryan Elsender, 29, received an eight-year sentence for causing the death of 16-year-old cyclist Jayden McGuinness in Newcastle.

Jayden, a cyclist, suffered serious injuries and passed away in the hospital two days later. People remember Jayden as a loving relative, a “fun brother and cousin.” He lived in the Walker area of town.
Elsender’s blood was tested after the crash and showed he had drugs in his system. He was over the limit for cannabis, and cocaine was also found in his system at the time of the collision.
Elsender, who is 29, left the scene but returned shortly after the crash and contacted the police. The police arrested Elsender regarding the collision and charged him with causing death by dangerous driving. He also faces a charge of dangerous driving.
Elsender pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court and was remanded into custody. On February 21, Elsender went back to court and received an eight-year prison sentence. He cannot drive for over fifteen years.
Jayden’s grandfather spoke in court, describing Jayden as “lush” with a “heart of gold.” He said Jayden thought about others, always acting as a loving relative. The grandfather has to drive past the crash site, which reminds him of losing Jayden.
Sergeant John Sanderson offered condolences to Jayden’s family. He hoped the court case brought closure for them and noted the tragic loss of someone so young. Elsender’s actions were reckless, causing Jayden’s death. If you drive dangerously while using drugs, expect prosecution.
