Couple struck in Spain by a drunk driver, resulting in one death and serious injuries. Driver has not faced court yet.

Emma Campbell survived the accident, but sadly, her husband Steven died. The driver still has not faced trial in Spain. An inquest explored Mr. Campbell’s death.
He was 51 and lived in Moreland Way. The hearing occurred on February 21st. He planned to retire soon from Wells Fargo, where he worked as an investments specialist. He wanted to spend time with his wife and kids.
Coroner Dr. Shirley Radcliffe spoke about his plans. Emma called him honest, caring, and funny. They married in 1997 and had two kids.
The couple flew to Murcia on July 6th and enjoyed a relaxing few days together. On July 9th they visited a restaurant to watch Spain play France in the Euros. Around 11 pm they decided to walk.
They were hit on a crosswalk outside the Costa Narejos Hotel. Emma couldn’t remember the crash, but said they were very careful people who always looked before crossing streets. Police found their bodies near the Peugeot, with the car’s engine still running.
Steven was unconscious at the scene, and Emma had head injuries, also complaining of shoulder and back pain. The driver said he didn’t see them, claiming a parked car blocked his view. Officers thought he seemed drunk and smelled strongly of alcohol; his breath test was over three times the limit.
Both Steven and Emma went to separate hospitals. Steven died the next day from his injuries. Emma stayed in a Spanish hospital for two weeks, then moved to a London hospital.
The driver faces charges for Steven’s death and drunk-driving. Spanish police cited his reckless behavior, driving without caution and endangering others. The car was likely speeding as well, based on the damage and their injuries. Steven suffered a brain injury from severe head trauma.
Dr. Radcliffe addressed the family at the inquest, explaining she could not deal with civil liability matters at that time. The death was due to a road traffic collision. She offered her deepest sympathies to them and called Steven’s death a tragedy.
The Campbell family released a statement later, saying their lives changed forever on July 9, 2024. “It is impossible to rewind time,” they stated, adding they want to remember Steven as a great man and hope their privacy will be respected.
