Enfield Council tenants are now moving out. They’re leaving three unsafe tower blocks. This process started two years ago. Walbrook House is already completely empty. It has 23 stories and is on Devonshire Road. Six leaseholders still live there, though.

Cheshire House and Shropshire House are next. These buildings are on Shires Estate. Three tenants remain in those towers. They will move out next month. Eighteen leaseholders still reside there. Inspections happened back in 2022. The inspections showed big repairs were needed.

These towers were built in the 1960s. Repairs could cost tens of millions. Gas was cut off for safety. Electric heating replaced it about six months later. Early in 2023, the council decided something. They chose to close the blocks.

Redevelopment is possible later. All three used prefabricated concrete panels. This type of construction raises concerns. Walbrook House needed more repairs than first thought. The cost rose from £14 million to over £30 million. Material costs increased dramatically.

Council member Ayten Guzel spoke about resident safety. She said resident wellbeing always comes first. Moving people was the best choice. The council is thankful for their cooperation. They want to provide safe, affordable housing. The council helped tenants find new homes.

They keep seeking funds to fix those tower blocks. If they can’t find funding, they might sell. Guzel said they will keep the community informed. This decision helps keep residents safe. They are dealing with old buildings despite money problems.

Demolition needs surveys, hazard checks, and a plan. Surrounding areas will need permits. The council actively talks to leaseholders. The BBC covered leaseholders at Walbrook House. They said offer prices were too low.

A council spokesperson said they offer support. They help each leaseholder individually. Funding would require certain contributions. This follows the lease terms.
