Actor Edward Fox campaigns against the proposed Wareham crossing closure, citing safety report findings.

Network Rail claimed they got a notice about the crossing from the Office of Road and Rail. A request for information showed this wasn’t true, though.
In 2009, Network Rail, the Office of Road and Rail, and Dorset Council attended a meeting. They added safety steps, including attendants and gates, because of incidents.
These changes happened in 2010. Since then, twelve incidents occurred over fourteen years. A report analyzed the risk and said the existing setup has a low risk.
Network Rail said the report only suggested closure with either ramps or lifts for a new bridge. But, the report offers other paths, and the crossing could stay, even without alternatives.
Furthermore, its removal might break the Equality Act if they don’t offer any other options. Dorset Council understands why people need the crossing every day.
The council has pledged its support and won’t pay for unwanted changes. They’ll fight the closure with the town, stating, “It’s the right thing to do.”
A transport official spoke in 2009, saying safety is vital in decisions. However, he thinks cutting off communities and limiting access to transport is also bad.
Mr. Fox asked the Network Rail chairman for help. He wants him to keep things as they are right now.
