Man with an electric car was wrongly charged £625 in ULEZ fees. TfL admits the error and issues a refund after intervention.

Keith was shocked by a large deduction. TfL took £625 from his bank account after he got the new plate. His car meets ULEZ standards, so it should be exempt. He bought the electric car after the ULEZ zone expanded in 2023.
He got charged for entering LEZ and ULEZ zones, twice in each zone. Electric cars don’t pay these charges. Keith thinks the old plate owner used a truck, likely from Northern Ireland.
Keith explained that the car is electric. He was charged £300 for the LEZ. The ULEZ cost him £12.50. He uses autopay for the Congestion Zone because he needs to visit the zone for medical reasons.
The car is listed as an ‘MG ZS SE EV’ on his TfL account, showing it is electric. He worries about daily charges piling up, potentially leading to a huge £9,000 bill each month.
He contacted TfL about the charges. He expected a quick apology and refund, but they told him to make an online enquiry. TfL has since refunded the money to Keith.
TfL stated they resolved the issue and apologized to Mr.Riding for the error. They said he was charged incorrectly because his car is compliant with the standards.
Keith hopes to get his money back soon. He says this is a warning about new plates. He considered the impact of more daily charges, which could cost him thousands unfairly.
