A bridge now honors Barney, a cat. It spans the New River in Enfield Town. Locals campaigned for the renaming.

The bridge links River View and Gentleman’s Row. Barney often rested there; people loved him. After Barney died, a petition started, and over 350 people signed it asking for the change.

Enfield Council agreed to rename the bridge. A ceremony occurred with jazz music, and the day felt cheerful and bright. Alan Boyle launched the petition.

He said the council supported the idea, and they even paid for the new sign. Love Your Doorstep backed the renaming too, along with Councillor Mike Rye and The Enfield Society.

Alan thanked everyone who signed the petition. Councillor Rye praised community spirit and thanked the council for funding the sign. Chris Smith was called “Barney’s dad.”

He expressed his surprise and gratitude. Chris said Barney watched from the bridge. He never believed the renaming would happen, adding sadly that Barney loved attention.
