Michael Steele will be released from prison. The Parole Board confirmed it. He was jailed for life in 1998 for murdering three men: Tony Tucker, Pat Tate, and Craig Rolfe. Steele always denied any involvement, and Jack Whomes was a co-defendant.

The three men were found dead in 1995 in a Range Rover in Rettendon, near Chelmsford. Prosecutors linked the killings to a drug deal dispute. This case inspired the film “Essex Boys,” which starred Sean Bean.

Steele is now in his 80s. The Parole Board decided to free him, stating he’s no longer a public danger. He must follow strict rules after release, including living at a specific address, behaving well, giving financial details, and surrendering his passport.

Electronic tagging and a curfew are required. He faces numerous restrictions, including the prohibition of contacting the media or publications and restrictions on electronic tech usage. Owning a boat, plane, or gun is also not allowed. This was Steele’s second Parole Board review, his minimum sentence being 23 years.

Steele did not get risk-reduction help in prison, partly because he denied the murders. The Parole Board summary explained this. At the time of the crime, Steele had risk factors, including a criminal lifestyle, drug use, and association with the wrong people.

Steele needed to control events and people, and access to firearms was another factor. He also used weapons and offended for financial gain and greed. The review stated Steele wanted status, respect, and exerting power linked to this. Thrill-seeking was also present.

Steele’s conduct in prison improved significantly. Witnesses stated he poses no imminent risk. The Parole Board considered all the evidence and decided imprisonment was not needed as it was no longer necessary to protect the public. Jack Whomes was freed in 2021.
