Calogero Ricotta, 64, gets life for murdering his wife, Maria Nugara, 54, and step son, Joe Morreale, 29, in Ugley, Essex.

Ricotta’s trial occurred at Chelmsford Crown Court, starting on February 3. The jury heard evidence for three weeks and deliberated for less than four hours. They found Ricotta guilty on all charges.
Ricotta received a life sentence and must serve at least 34 years. Judge Dame Mary Stacey acknowledged the family’s pain at the sentencing. Joe bravely stood up to Ricotta who killed Maria and Joe in a cowardly way.
Ricotta used control against Maria because his ego prevented a divorce. He tried to force Maria to stay married, but murdering her orphaned his children. Maria’s family said her love was unmatched and that she had a great sense of humor.
Joe was always kind and gentle, and his family called him a hero. He attempted to save his mom. Police arrived quickly at the scene, and Ricotta was charged with two murders and for harming another person present.
Detective Inspector Lydia George said Ricotta was cold and showed no remorse. Maria and Joe had their futures stolen, but securing the plea brought justice. DI George thanked everyone involved and asked for the family’s privacy.
