Former sergeant Tyler Coppin dismissed for misconduct after a conviction under the Public Order Act.

Coppin is from Colchester. People saw him chanting at Liverpool fans during a Liverpool versus Chelsea game on October 20, 2024. Stewards removed him, and police arrested him then.
Coppin went to court in December in South Sefton. He admitted guilt under the Public Order Act because his behavior could cause alarm or distress.
The court issued a three-year football ban. He also had to pay £645 in fines. This conviction led to a misconduct hearing.
Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington led the panel, and the hearing took place on February 7. Coppin spoke strongly in his defense. The panel decided Coppin failed to meet standards related to integrity and respect; his conduct also brought discredit.
Harrington knew Coppin felt sorry and noted Coppin’s good past record. However, he dismissed Coppin immediately, adding Coppin’s name to a barred list.
Harrington said Coppin showed “serious stupidity”. He thinks dismissal is the only proper result. Harrington added that Coppin seemed sorry but may not grasp the impact of his words. But, he did break the law and got a criminal conviction.
His actions hurt public trust. Harrington wants to send a message that police do not accept this kind of behavior. Police must uphold the law and cannot break it themselves; that’s what Harrington believes.
