Matt Fiddes used to work for Michael Jackson. He opened a martial arts school branch in Haxby. It’s called MF Martial Arts. It opened last September.

David Crompton runs the Haxby school. Thirty students attend classes weekly. The students are as young as three years old. Classes occur at Oaken Grove Community Centre.

Matt asked David to open the school because of David’s martial arts background. Matt actively helps develop the school’s program. The program is “always evolving”.

David is 38 and from Rawcliffe. He agreed to run the martial arts franchise after learning more about the school. The program mixes taekwondo, kick boxing, and karate. Students can train to compete.

David says it’s more than a class and explained, “It’s a lifestyle program.” Kids learn to kick and punch; David said that the kids truly love this part. The classes also give them a good attitude.

“We teach kids, don’t fight,” David stated, emphasizing that fighting is a last resort. The program is about life skills and builds strong, confident people.

Students earn belts for achievements. The school also focuses on good habits outside the class, where good behavior is encouraged. Brushing teeth, cleaning bedrooms, and eating vegetables all count towards progress.

When parents and schools are pleased, kids earn a tag on their belt. Positive reinforcement builds their confidence. Some kids cried before but now love staying.

Children respond well, especially those struggling. Knowing they are noticed helps greatly. This also benefits the students’ self-esteem.

David struggled at school. He notes that kids now face more distractions, mentioning how social media and phones impact learning. He wants classes to aid focus and encourages confidence in youngsters too. “Anything is possible,” he says.

Parents enjoy classes, and some even join in sometimes. “Many are grown-up kids,” David said, observing that parents love watching progress. Parents see skills learned immediately.

David wants another location in Rawcliffe and hopes for daily sessions across York. Currently, classes are on Thursdays at Oaken Grove Centre in Haxby. The younger group meets first, and then the older group follows.
