Council considers parking charges on Fallingroyd in Hebden Bridge. This follows parking ban protests and cycle lane worries.

Now, the council suggests a new parking setup, considering marked spaces and parking charges. This aims to better control parking in the region, potentially giving drivers safer bays with more room and easing town center crowding through long-stay parking.
People feared removing Fallingroyd parking would strain Hebden Bridge, a popular tourist spot where finding parking can already be tough. An online petition opposes the proposed parking charges.
Rebecca Boden started the petition, arguing that low-wage workers use the spaces daily. Commuters, residents, and visitors depend on free access, and parking fees at Fallingroyd would negatively affect lives.
Fallingroyd is part of a £5 million project that hopes to improve road safety on the A646 route. The project also aims to improve journey times, air quality, cycling, and access to jobs and housing.
The council listened to feedback from last autumn, resulting in this new plan that addresses road safety and traffic issues. Recognizing the need for people to park their cars, they aim to balance resident concerns and parking needs.
Double yellow lines may appear near Mayroyd, a narrower area with a slight bend where buses and trucks struggle to pass each other. Double yellow lines are also planned near westbound bus stops.
These changes require public input and will be regularly reviewed. Councilor Sarah Courtney says the plans reflect concerns and believes the new strategy will support local businesses.
Hebden Bridge is a valued visitor location, and the aim is to make travel safe and straightforward, improving public transport and reducing congestion. The new Fallingroyd plan ultimately aims to address those issues.
