A resident’s outrage after discovering a large fly-tipped pile in Risca, sparking concern over illegal waste disposal.

Fly-tipping means dumping waste illegally and is considered a serious crime. People can face big fines or even jail time for this offense. This includes waste left near public bins.
To ensure your waste is disposed of legally, use a registered waste carrier. You can find a list of registered carriers on the Natural Resources Wales website. If you don’t check how your waste is disposed of and it ends up fly-tipped, you might get a fine up to £5000. They must be a legit waste carrier.
Always check your waste contractor’s license and ask to see it. Record your contractor’s details and keep a copy of your waste transfer note. Doing so is important in case your waste is dumped illegally.
Fly-tipped waste can be hazardous, so do not touch it. Instead, note what you see, the date, time, and location. Report this information to the local council.
Don’t approach anyone fly-tipping. Simply note what is being dumped and record the offense’s location. If you can, safely take pictures and report the incident to Newport City Council at 01633 656656.
