Tribute to Brian Smith, Keighley native, former news reporter, and rugby league writer for Telegraph & Argus, who died recently.

In 1968, Brian began his work at the Telegraph & Argus. He became their rugby league writer, with Bradford Northern as his primary focus. His coverage extended to Challenge Cup finals at Wembley. He also covered Regal Trophy games, including John Player No 6 deciders and Yorkshire Cup finals.
Brian’s reporting included Great Britain’s international games and an Australia tour. He also wrote for trade papers, using “Keith Lee” and “Ken Brian” as alternative pen names. Additionally, he wrote for the Press Association before ultimately becoming deputy sports editor under Peter Royston.
After retiring from the T&A in 1995, Brian’s memory is fondly cherished by David Markham. He respected Brian’s rugby knowledge and appreciated how he shared his opinions simply. Brian valued the game’s traditions and was considered a great journalist with many rugby contacts.
Outside of his professional life, Brian enjoyed playing golf and belonged to Branshaw Golf Club. He is survived by his daughter Diane and his son Nigel. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who mourn his loss.
